Is Lexapro Safe During Pregnancy
Status
cautionReason
Official labels warn of late-pregnancy newborn effects and possible PPHN. Benefits may outweigh risks for some patients.
Drug Information
Safe Amount
Dosage must be determined by your provider based on individual risk/benefit.
Effects
- Pregnancy
- Use in pregnancy needs individual review. Untreated depression also carries pregnancy risks. Late pregnancy use needs extra monitoring.
- Mother
- May help treat depression or anxiety. Stopping suddenly can cause relapse or withdrawal symptoms; postpartum bleeding risk may be increased near delivery.
- Baby
- Late pregnancy exposure may cause poor adaptation after birth, such as breathing trouble, feeding problems, low tone, or temperature instability. Possible PPHN has been reported.
Trimester Notes
- 1st Trimester
- Available data do not suggest an increased risk of birth defects above background risk, but evidence is not perfect.
- 2nd Trimester
- May be continued if benefits outweigh risks; provider review is important.
- 3rd Trimester
- Later pregnancy use may increase the chance of newborn adaptation symptoms and possible persistent pulmonary hypertension.
Risk-Benefit Note
For antidepressants, untreated depression in pregnancy can also harm mother and baby. Your prescriber should weigh relapse risk against medicine risks before any change.
