Effects
- Pregnancy
- Often used for heartburn in pregnancy. Do not use sodium bicarbonate products. Long-term or high-dose use is not advised.
- Mother
- Can cause constipation or diarrhea. High or long-term doses may affect mineral balance, especially with kidney disease.
- Baby
- No specific fetal harm is expected from short-term antacid use, but data are limited and high doses may cause problems.
Trimester Notes
- 1st Trimester
- Often used if needed for heartburn, but use the smallest amount for the shortest time and check with your provider.
- 2nd Trimester
- Can be used if needed, but do not use large or repeated doses without provider guidance.
